For anyone unfamiliar, Tomorrowland Winter launched as a way to bring the production values and lineup depth of the summer festival into a ski resort setting. Instead of one main stage in a park, you get multiple stages scattered across the mountain, DJ sets between runs, and a village that turns into a nightlife hub once the lifts close. It’s a different animal from the Belgium edition, built more around the full trip than a single day of music.

Organizers are framing this edition as more than just a festival with snow attached. The idea is a complete mountain getaway — ski or snowboard during the day, catch sets on mountain stages in the afternoon, then head into Alpe d’Huez itself once the sun goes down for the nightlife side of things. Ticket sales open in October 2026, but the planning window is already open.

Tomorrowland is offering both 7-day and 4-day packages, with options that bundle the festival ticket, ski pass, and accommodation together, or let visitors handle lodging on their own. That flexibility extends to lodging types too — hostels, hotels, and chalets are all in play across Alpe d’Huez and neighboring villages, with travel by train, bus, or car depending on how visitors want to get there. There’s also a Discover Paris add-on for anyone looking to turn the trip into a longer French getaway before heading up into the mountains.

Starting September 9, Tomorrowland has put its full experience simulator online, letting people browse accommodation, ticket, and travel combinations and start piecing together their own trip before tickets actually go on sale.

Ski by Day, Dance by Night

The skiing side of things isn’t an afterthought here. Alpe d’Huez sits within the Grand Domaine Ski area, which spans more than 250 kilometers of slopes and 78 lifts connecting Alpe d’Huez with Oz-en-Oisans, Auris-en-Oisans, Vaujany, and Villard-Reculas. Known as the “island in the sun” for its roughly 300 days of annual sunshine, the resort’s south-facing slopes cover everything from beginner runs to serious terrain.

The standout run is La Sarenne, which kicks off at Pic Blanc above 3,330 meters and stretches 16 kilometers down — one of the longest ski runs in Europe, dropping about 1,450 meters along the way. There’s also close to 50 kilometers of Nordic trails for cross-country skiers, and beginners and freeriders have plenty of terrain to work with as well.

None of this requires strapping into skis, though. During Tomorrowland Winter, all the mountain stages and platforms stay accessible on foot, so anyone skipping the slopes can still get up to the stages and catch the music at altitude.

The show was staged at the invitation of the Consulate General of France in New York, timed to mark both the 140th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty and America’s 250th anniversary of independence. The Statue of Liberty was originally a gift from France to commemorate America’s centennial, making the Franco-American angle central to the event’s concept.

Canitrot’s Monumental Tour is built around the idea of transforming culturally significant heritage sites into immersive concert experiences. Previous editions have taken place at Mont-Saint-Michel, the Eiffel Tower, the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame de Paris, and other UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Liberty Lights marks the project’s first stateside outing.

The performance opened with a narration by actor Jean Reno, before Canitrot performed a set of his electronic productions — including three tracks written specifically for the show: ‘Arcadia,’ ‘Icon,’ and ‘Horizon.’ The lighting design was handled in collaboration with show director Romain Pissenem of High Scream, whose previous work includes David Guetta at Stade de France, Black Coffee at London’s O2 Arena, and Tiesto’s live set at the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Canitrot spoke about the project’s intent: “Monumental Tour emerged from the aspiration to foster a dialogue between music and locations that convey narratives beyond our individual experiences. The Statue of Liberty epitomizes this universal significance, and envisioning an artistic creation for this iconic site today constitutes a profound privilege.”

Beyond the live audience, Liberty Lights had a significant broadcast reach. The performance aired on July 3rd as part of Disney Celebrates America, with multi-platform coverage across ABC, Disney+, ESPN, Hulu, National Geographic, Freeform, FX, and ABC News Live.

The move came as temperatures approached 104°F (40°C) in parts of the country and officials scrambled to reduce health risks associated with dehydration and large public gatherings.

The annual festival, held every June 21, transforms cities and towns across France into giant open-air stages with free performances spanning every genre imaginable. Despite the extreme conditions, authorities opted to move forward with festivities while implementing additional safety measures.

Heat Wave Prompts Unusual Restrictions

Following a crisis meeting, French officials announced that public alcohol consumption would be prohibited in departments under red heat alerts. Organizers of state-sponsored events were also instructed not to serve alcohol, with the government citing concerns over dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

While outdoor sporting events were canceled in Paris, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that Fête de la Musique would continue as planned. The city prepared for millions of attendees by increasing access to drinking water and keeping parks open around the clock to provide relief from the heat.

Several municipalities canceled celebrations altogether, while others modified schedules and increased emergency resources to accommodate the unusually high temperatures.

France wasn’t alone in facing dangerous conditions. The heat wave stretched across much of Western Europe, impacting Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Temperatures surpassed 100°F (38°C) in several countries, with parts of France expected to experience some of the hottest days ever recorded in June. More than half of France’s departments were placed under red alerts, while schools closed, transportation systems experienced disruptions, and iconic landmarks including the Eiffel Tower adjusted operations.

Authorities throughout Europe issued warnings about heat exhaustion and dehydration as climate experts pointed to increasingly frequent and intense heat waves across the continent.

While Fête de la Musique is not a traditional music festival, the restrictions highlight a growing reality for live events worldwide.

Under the proposal, ravers could face fines of €1,500 for attending an unlicensed event. Said quantity could rise to €3,000 for repeat offenders. Organizers face even harsher penalties, including up to six months in prison and fines of up to €30,000 for events exceeding 250 attendees that do not hold the necessary permits.

The move follows a recent gathering dubbed ‘the last rave’ on the outskirts of Marseille, where over 300 people attended in anticipation of the crackdown. Italy’s free party scene disappeared after authorities decided to follow similar measures to the ones included the new proposal. A movement filled with culture, history, and that would eventually develop into today’s clubbing/festival scene.

Authorities backing Marseille’s Illegal Rave Law argue, well, what everyone else has argued for decades regarding free parties. Safety risks, environmental damage, and the lack of regulation. Illegal raves often operate outside official frameworks, raising concerns around their ability to operate safely while looking after both the crowd, the equipment and the events’ montage, and the events’ development. However, it is hard not to wonder who’s to blame for this so mentioned lack of regulation. Wouldn’t both the scene and the authorities benefit from clear guidelines that help generate safe spaces and contexts for free parties to take place?

The reaction from the electronic music community has been immediate. Organizations have criticized the proposal, calling it overly restrictive and disconnected from the realities of the culture, two extremely hard to beat arguments. Free party culture advocates argue these gatherings represent important spaces for expression, inclusion, and community-building. Most importantly, they do so without charging people for it, democratizing the people’s access to culture and art.

Free party culture has existed in France for decades. It operates in legal grey areas. Its influence shaped the founding stones of the current electronic music landscape all around the globe. Warehouse parties. The iconic Teknivals. Events that held their position as an alternative to commercial clubbing, rooted in autonomy and DIY values.

What makes this moment different is the scale of potential enforcement. The proposed law is set to broaden the definition of “event organizer”, meaning that helping with logistics or sharing event details might also end up in legal consequences. The annual event, held every June 21 to celebrate the Summer Solstice, transforms cities and towns across France into open-air music stages. But this year’s festivities were overshadowed by a disturbing wave of suspected syringe attacks.

Authorities are still investigating whether the incidents were linked to needle spiking — the practice of injecting victims with substances like GHB or Rohypnol without consent. In Paris alone, 13 cases were reported, including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man who both felt unwell after being pricked. “Some victims were taken to the hospital for toxicological tests,” the ministry noted.

Three of the Paris cases are now under active investigation. In total, 12 people have been arrested across France in connection with the syringe reports — four of them in Angoulême, where police say around 50 victims may have been targeted.

Despite the safety concerns, millions took to the streets, with authorities describing “unprecedented crowds” in the capital. Over 370 arrests were made nationwide for other offenses — nearly 90 in Paris alone. Fourteen people were injured during the event, including a 17-year-old found with abdominal stab wounds. Thirteen law enforcement officers were also reportedly hurt.

But plot twist, KAS:ST then fuses some Techno elements, into it, with aggressive vocals, some acid reverbs, and that sensational tire screeching sound that reminds us of a Formula 1 circuit.
