It’s never easy when you’re forced to say Goodbye, let alone to someone as iconic as Moya Brennan. Among the most recognisable voices in Folk history (and affectionately nicknamed the First Lady of Celtic Music), she was part of the craze of the Clannad band, a family endeavour which eventually sold tens of millions of copies in albums in the span of around 50 years.

Older sister to iconic Enya (you can tell art truly runs in the blood of their family), Moya also made her way to Electronic music, delivering the vocals to one of, what many people recognise as, the most transcendental tracks ever in the genre, ‘Saltwater’, produced by Chicane in 1999.

Her voice is the key element in other, more recent Dance tracks as well, such as Trance Wax’s ‘Rivers’ (2021) and Raz Nitzan’s ‘Find The Sun’ (2018). Also, she worked with none other than Hans Zimmer, elaborating the score to the 2004 film King Arthur, and trying her hand at other film scores such as Titanic, among others. You can tell that she had an exceptional timbre, one so unique you instantly know when she was in the studio.

Moya passed in her home in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal, on April 13th, surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her husband Tim Jarvis, her daughter Aisling and her son Paul, as well as her brothers Ciarán and Pól, and her sister Enya.

It’s never easy to bid farewell to someone who’s carved a space so wide and extensive in the beautiful world that is music. But as bittersweet as it may be to say goodbye, the fact that it saddens us means Moya earned a special place in our hearts. She’s certainly a part of those select souls whose legacy truly outlives them, allowing us to press play whenever we want to listen to her gifted voice again.

They say a person doesn’t truly die until it’s forgotten by every last inhabitant of this planet. And in the case of the iconic Moya Brennan, that day is not even remotely close.

We send our condolences to Moya’s family and friends, who we know will make sure her legacy lives on, as well as the countless fans she garnered worldwide, and even the casual listeners who, inadvertently, are humming to ‘Saltwater’ right now, extending the life of an angel on this green Earth.

Having been born and raised in Tokyo, SHIMA transitioned from a J-Pop girl group singer to an electrifying solo artist. In fact, her musical journey began at the age of 14 when she signed with a prominent Japanese label, and her passion has since taken her across the globe. At 18, SHIMA relocated to the United States to pursue a degree in Music and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami, where she honed her production and engineering skills.

As a result, this diverse experience informs her signature sound, which explores a captivating blend of electronica genres, including indie, trap, house, and techno. Currently implementing herself in Los Angeles, SHIMA will continue soaring in 2025, with thrilling performances lined up at Miami Music Week, Coachella DoLaB, Breakaway, and Electric Forest, as well as exciting new releases on the way. “‘1807’ samples a Japanese folk song that used to be sung by fishermen in the Hokkaido region of Japan, while they worked on their sailboats to catch cod fish. The regional dialect is unfortunately part of a shrinking culture that people are increasingly starting to realize the importance of preserving and keeping alive in the public consciousness. By combining this folk song with totally new influences and modern synth leads, I hope that in my own small way I can also contribute to keeping these cultures and traditions alive and evolving.”

What if we closed the year on a slightly tangential note to our usual coverage? Have a look at this. Above & Beyond member Tony McGuinness, who you may know has a long and fruitful story in the music world, released a long-locked-away project of his halfway through the year, a Folk/Rock album titled Salt. And just before the year is over, both he and his team decided they’d give a little more love to one of the best-received songs of the album: ‘Crying‘.

They’ve now released the single on its own, own artwork and all, to give the corresponding starring role to a track which stuck with listeners of the body of work around the world. I’d understand the feeling: from what’s perhaps my most played album this year, ‘Crying’ is, also, my favourite track.

About the single, Tony recalls, “Crying was my first attempt to write a song on the piano, and I think the nature of writing on the piano tends to make the whole thing sound more traditional, at least for me. And so I decided to write a more traditional song, but with a sort of twist at the end which is a classic songwriting motif“.

Falling slightly outside the whole Shelley connection of the concept behind Salt, given the fact that this particular song was not born from recalling moments in the relationship of both, “it’s a nice traditional song about a man not showing his emotions. And while it wasn’t strictly written about Shelley, I always felt it deserved to be on the album“.

Nevertheless, the lyrics are not completely disjointed from Shelley. T adds, “When we said goodbye at Gatwick Airport, I probably lost a stone in tears“. ‘Crying’ gives a bit of an insight into the male response of simply not breaking down when situations call for it, not meaning that it isn’t painful or tear-inducing, instead being a reflex some of us involuntarily exercise. Not crying, says Tony, is “something that men tend to be very good at“.

Ukrainian-born, Berlin-based artist RAJA is telling the story of a lifetime this year. Inspired by a profound personal odyssey across Africa, RAJA seeks to bridge cultures by sharing the lives and rhythms of the people he encountered, and he continues this exploration of cross-cultural exchange through music with the release of his new single, ‘Babulana‘.

Lifted from his forthcoming EP, Wakanda, ‘Babulana‘ tells the story of a day in the life of one of the Maasai tribespeople he spent time with whilst in Tanzania. Through this tale, RAJA hopes to share the feelings of hope, joy, and ambition that can be found inside us all. The EP is a broader collection of work celebrating the diversity of global societies.

By sharing the tales and melodies of the Maasai people, RAJA hopes to increase awareness of the vulnerability of ancient cultures and the critical importance of safeguarding their traditions for future generations. But he translates those words — and worlds — in a groovy, irresistible way of crafting Dance music. This one’s ought to have you dancing around, believe us.

Marcus Schossow- Lionheart (‘Panski Remix)

Everyone remembers Avicii’s 2013 Ultra performance, when he blindsided the electronic music world with a sudden introduction to country fused electronic beats. Fast forward two years and the supremely talented producer ‘Panski is trying to spearhead his own genre of hoedown house. This unique blend of bluegrass, folk and house draws from Avicii’s southern influences but deviates from his big room style. ‘Panski first introduced hoedown house on his remix to Gary Barlow’s ‘Let Me Go,’ an irresistibly smooth remix that turned heads in the industry. It notably attracted Marcus Schossow‘s attention, who asked ‘Panski to produce an official remix for his hit single ‘Lionheart.’

‘Panski’s take on ‘Lionheart’ flips the original on its head, introducing his distinct folk inspired style. As the song picks up, the talented producer integrates traditional southern instruments which give the track an air of authenticity; the banjo gives the song its first pleasant surprise, but it is easily outdone with a melodic mandala which ties the track together perfectly. With hoedown house, ‘Panski is revolutionizing an exciting new style, as country badly needs to be integrated into the electronic music landscape. Hopefully ‘Lionheart’ will be one of many future examples of this promising new trend.

Skymatic – Azerbaijan (Intergalactic Bootleg)

Well this one came out of nowhere. Skymatic, building hype for their Remix Tape, that’s coming not soon enough apparently. I will be paying attention to this duo from Atlanta. Melodic heavy hip hop/dubstep beats, but the violin work is totally on point. This is the kind of fusion I keep banging on about EDM needing to get into. These genre combinations are going to create some insanely beautiful sounds, especially as we start pouring the global vibes on. I didn’t know Azerbaijan had folk music that you could mix with Beastie Boys lyrics. Now I’m going to just start throwing Eastern European folk music & hip hop together on YouTube. This stuff is fantastic, it’s a free download & over all too soon.

Kilter – Coward Ft. Ngaiire

For many people out there, winter is in full swing. While drinking some hot chocolate and getting cozy by the fire can help you warm up for a short period of time, there is no better medicine than some super mellow house music from Kilter. The Australian producer is currently enjoying the sun down under and his track, ‘Coward‘, certainly takes us back to the summer nights when it was still light out before 5 pm. The tune was definitely one of the standouts from his 6-song EP released way back in July and it’s receiving new life after being uploaded on to his SoundCloud yesterday. The collaboration with his fellow Aussies, Ngaiire, is unlike any other track off of Shades, as both artists are able to bring their signature sounds to the table and create a fusion between folk and electronic music unlike any we’ve previously heard. Be sure to mark December 12th down on your calendar, as ‘Coward’ will be rereleased alongside remixes from Naderi, Akouo and Jonas LR.
