Hurricane Marie reached Category 2 strength after developing off the Pacific coast. The storm brought powerful swells and winds of up to 100 mph to parts of Southern California. The resulting surf and storm runoff caused extensive erosion across several coastal areas.

Ocean Way Festival Forced To Cancel

Ocean Way Festival was set to bring a major lineup to Santa Monica Beach for its debut edition.

The bill included BLOND, Hot Chip, DJ Harvey, SG Lewis, Carlita, Coco & Breezy, and more. The event was being organized by Goldenvoice and was expected to welcome tens of thousands of festivalgoers.

However, the damage proved too significant to overcome.

Following an assessment of the beach, the City of Santa Monica determined that the available usable space had been dramatically reduced. As a result, there was not enough safe ground to construct the required festival infrastructure.

Festival organizers confirmed the cancellation on September 12.

“Storm surf and runoff has caused significant beach erosion and the festival can no longer be safely held as planned,” the festival shared.

The decision came after Hurricane Marie’s impact left a large portion of the festival site severely eroded. Santa Monica officials also declared an emergency following the storm due to coastal flooding, property damage and beach erosion.

Ocean Way Festival Will Return In 2027

Although the 2026 debut will not happen, Ocean Way Festival is already looking toward next year.

Organizers confirmed that plans for a 2027 edition are underway, giving fans another chance to experience the new festival on Santa Monica Beach.

Mayor Caroline Torosis also addressed the cancellation, expressing her disappointment for the artists, fans and local businesses affected by the decision.

However, safety remains the priority.

The festival’s 2026 ticket holders will receive automatic refunds. Meanwhile, Goldenvoice and Santa Monica officials are continuing to work together toward bringing the event to the beach in 2027.

For now, the debut of Ocean Way Festival will have to wait. The lineup may have been ready to take over Santa Monica, but the coastline needs time to recover first.

Over at the Prismatic Playa, afternoons belong to Maddy O’Neal’s MADHAUS project, Pheel., Thought Process (playing a liquid drum and bass set), Paul Basic, RJD2, and Saturna. Once the sun goes down, the Holographic S.O.I.R.E.E silent disco returns for afterhours programming, with Midicinal, R!AHT, Homemade Spaceship, TF Marz, and others taking turns behind the decks.

Wellness Programming Expands Again

Yahn Dawn has always tried to be more than a music festival, and the 2026 edition leans further into that identity. The Horizon 5K Sprint, a Pretty Lights fan favorite, returns Saturday, September 19 with a Pride theme this year. The run drew 400 sign-ups in its first outing, and proceeds from 2026’s edition will benefit the Buena Vista Pride Coalition.

The Prismatic Playa and Celestial Sanctuary serve as the festival’s wellness hubs, hosting more than 20 sessions across breathwork, sound healing, yoga, and ceremony work throughout the weekend. Emergency crews responded to the Square One camp at approximately 6:20 p.m. on September 1. The injured man had fallen two levels from near the top of the camp’s 10-level Nest Tower, according to witnesses who spoke with SFGATE.

Bystanders said the man landed on a metal crossbar during the fall. He appeared to strike his head, ribs and hip, although officials have not released details about his injuries.

Reaching him presented another challenge. Some emergency responders climbed the structure and stabilized the man while another crew cleared space below. A construction vehicle then entered the camp carrying an aerial platform that crews raised to his position.

Responders loaded the man onto the platform before carefully lowering him back to the playa. Medical personnel transferred him to a gurney and checked his vital signs. When they asked his age, he responded that he was 30.

An ambulance then transported him to Rampart, Burning Man’s temporary hospital. No further update on his condition has been made public.

A Complicated Rescue on Tutu Tuesday

The emergency unfolded during one of Burning Man’s more recognizable traditions. September 1 was Tutu Tuesday, when participants across Black Rock City wear tutus regardless of their other plans for the day.

The injured attendee was wearing one at the time of the accident. About half of the emergency crew responding to the fall were also dressed in tutus as they carried out the rescue.

Behind the unusual visuals, however, crews faced a serious situation high above the desert floor. The Nest Tower stands approximately 55 feet tall and contains 10 levels, requiring responders to reach and stabilize the attendee before they could move him.

Square One camp leaders Lee and Gaby Merschon told SFGATE that their camp has constructed the Nest Tower at Burning Man since 2021. They have made the structure taller over successive years and said Tuesday’s incident marked its first injury.

The accident adds to the medical emergencies that occur each year in Black Rock City. Burning Man’s combination of large-scale art, temporary structures and remote desert conditions creates challenges that differ considerably from conventional festivals.

Falls from elevated structures have caused serious injuries in previous years. In 2024, Burning Man attendee Rachael Gingery fell approximately 20 feet from an art installation resembling a sinking ship. The accident fractured her spine and a rib and punctured a lung. She eventually recovered and returned to Burning Man.

Burning Man Continues Through a Difficult Week

The Nest Tower rescue occurred during an event already dealing with several disruptions.

Heavy rain later turned sections of the playa into thick mud and forced organizers to temporarily close Burning Man’s entrance and airport. The conditions complicated vehicle movement across Black Rock City before the gates eventually reopened.

Burning Man also confirmed that a participant in his mid-50s died after experiencing a medical emergency on September 3. This is following news of a homicide that occurred the previous year. Organizers said responders immediately provided lifesaving treatment and transported him to the onsite emergency care center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.

Despite the incidents and weather disruptions, Burning Man continues through September 7 in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.

The Burning Man Project had not publicly provided additional information about the Nest Tower accident or the attendee’s condition at the time of reporting.

• Camping equipment plus food and water
• RVs or other accommodations
• Time away from work

A tougher economic environment that has been scaling down live events globally may now be affecting demand for an event that requires a substantial financial and logistical commitment from attendees. Burning Man veterans share that the average attendee should spend around $1,000 to access a desirable level of comfort on the festival grounds.

An Untraditional Ticket System

Burning Man doesn’t sell one general-admission ticket at a set price. Instead, they operate under a scaled design with higher-priced tickets helping subsidize access for other participants and fund art and operational costs. This ticketing philosophy follows the festival’s broader community and gifting-focused structure.

Visible on their official Ticket page, tickets for 2026 include tiers ranging from $550 to $3,000. Their $775 ticket is noted as the amount covering all costs for one participant in Black Rock City.

As part of their ticketing policy, Burning Man operates STEP – the Secure Ticket Exchange Program – as an official resale mechanism. It’s noted that STEP offers the only fully safe way to buy or sell authentic tickets and vehicle passes on the secondary market. This deliberate structure helps discourage speculative resale and consumer confusion.

Burning Man 2026 Moves Forward

Amidst impacted ticket sales, Black Rock City emerges yet again in the Nevada desert from August 30th through September 7th. It’s typical operations, consisting of elaborate art installations, community events and performances, will continue.

It’s unknown whether prices might pick up next year or how organizers may be forced to make difficult decisions should this low demand persist. For now, the city rages on.

Burning Man has introduced a new laser safety protocol ahead of this year’s gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Handheld lasers remain prohibited, while larger systems used by art installations, theme camps and Mutant Vehicles will face additional registration, inspection and operating requirements.

The organization says rapidly advancing technology has changed the risks surrounding increasingly powerful laser equipment. While organizers have no plans to remove lasers from the playa entirely, the new protocol places considerably more responsibility on the people operating them.

Every approved installation must now have a certified Laser Safety Officer responsible for overseeing the system and training its operators. Equipment has to registered before arriving at Black Rock City and inspected on the playa before use. Depending on the system, operators may also need documentation from the FDA and clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Once the lasers switch on, operators must follow several additional restrictions. Active beam zones must remain at least 10 feet away from participants and other uncontrolled areas, while physical masking prevents beams from dropping below the permitted height. Crowd scanning is prohibited, and every setup requires a physical emergency stop within immediate reach.

Operators also have to remain sober and attentive while their equipment is running. Burning Man specifically requires them to shut down lasers when changing conditions create additional risks, including low-flying aircraft, dust storms or vehicles moving into the operating area.

Technology Has Changed the Risk

Organizers warn that some newer high-powered LED fixtures can produce extremely concentrated beams. In some cases, their intensity can approach regulated laser systems.

The Festival hasn’t prohibited those lights outright. However, operators need to understand the safety distances for their equipment. They must also keep concentrated beams away from participants.

That distinction helps explain the broader approach Burning Man is taking this year. The event isn’t trying to eliminate one of Black Rock City’s most recognizable visual elements. Rather, it is treating powerful lighting systems more like professional equipment.

Handheld lasers are the clearest example. Despite some reports framing their prohibition as new for 2026, Burning Man has restricted handheld lasers for years. The current rules reinforce that prohibition while substantially expanding the safety framework surrounding larger systems that remain permitted.

Burning Man also plans to take violations seriously. Organizers describe enforcement of the new protocol as zero tolerance. They can remove equipment that fails to meet registration, inspection or safety requirements.

For most participants, the result shouldn’t mean a laser-free Black Rock City. The beams cutting across the desert will still be there. What changes in 2026 is what happens behind them, with more training, more oversight and less room for improvisation as increasingly powerful technology reaches the playa.
