The community is mourning after a tragic incident earlier this week. Festival organizers confirmed that on Monday morning, an attendee passed away after receiving medical treatment onsite and being transferred to a local hospital. Elements took to Instagram to share the news and their condolences. It is a classy move by the festival and certainly something none of us want to see.

While the exact cause of death has not been determined, organizers have urged the community to rally together in support and to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

Raised just outside New York City, Mayers graduated from Tulane University in 1995 and quickly immersed himself in the vibrant New Orleans music scene. He worked at iconic institutions like Tipitina’s and Jazz Fest before co-founding Superfly Entertainment in 1996 alongside Rick Farman, Richard Goodstone, and Kerry Black. The group’s first concert—featuring The Meters, Maceo Parker, and Rebirth Brass Band—was held during Mardi Gras, marking the start of their ambitious journey.

In 2002, Superfly launched the inaugural Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. Partnering with Ashley Capps of AC Entertainment, agent Chip Hooper of Paradigm, and manager Coran Capshaw of Red Light Management, they transformed a farm an hour outside of Nashville into a massive cultural event. With headliners like Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, Bonnaroo sold out its first year and quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the modern music festival movement. It set a new standard for large-scale events in the 21st century, inspiring countless other festivals across the U.S.

Superfly continued to expand its festival footprint. In 2005, the company launched Vegoose, a Halloween-themed festival in Las Vegas. Three years later, Mayers partnered with Another Planet Entertainment to debut Outside Lands in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The multi-genre, multi-day event grew into the largest independently owned music festival in the country.

Mayers’ legacy lives on in the festivals and experiences that helped redefine live entertainment for a new generation.

Details surrounding the attack remain unclear, but according to Torres’ family, she was stabbed multiple times around 1:00 am on January 26th by a man who had been ejected from the event. Security personnel reportedly used mace to subdue the attacker.

“We are devastated at the tragic loss of a community member,” reads a joint statement from event organizers Space Yacht, CYBER RODEO, and UNDERWAR3. “The victim’s family has established a GoFundMe page at @JusticeForMandi. We urge everyone to donate and share the link.”

As per a post on the @JusticeForMandi account, Torres was at the event with her brother and friends. When multiple assailants allegedly attacked her brother, Torres intervened, tragically resulting in her own demise. Witnesses described the perpetrator as a man dressed entirely in black, while another attacker was reported to be wearing a distinctive navy bomber jacket with a white collar lining and glasses.

The incident has reignited concerns about safety at dance events. In response, prominent promoter FEVER has announced a series of new security measures, including increased security and medical personnel presence, the implementation of metal detectors at entrances, and a stricter zero-tolerance policy. Local event organizer The LA Raver has also indicated plans to follow suit.

The GoFundMe campaign for Torres’ family has already surpassed the halfway mark, raising nearly $20,000 of its $30,000 goal. In response to these events, the Metropolitan Police and Enfield Council have initiated a licensing review scheduled for January. This crucial meeting will determine the future of the venue — one of the most important ones in the entire country.

The most recent incident involved the passing of a 29-year-old woman on December 7th, suspected to be drug-related. This followed the earlier death of a 27-year-old man on October 12th under similar circumstances. Furthermore, a violent stabbing occurred on November 16th. While an emergency council meeting on December 12th permitted the venue to continue operations under heightened restrictions, the upcoming January 7th meeting will ultimately decide Drumsheds’ fate.

Drumsheds, a prominent entertainment hub, occupies a former IKEA building and boasts an impressive capacity of 15,000, solidifying its position as the largest club in the United Kingdom. Managed by Broadwick Live, the venue features three distinct dancefloors, a variety of bars, and a substantial outdoor area, catering to a diverse range of events.

Jackmaster’s career took off after he began working at the Rubadub record shop in Glasgow at the age of 14. He quickly gained a reputation for his extensive knowledge of music and his exceptional DJ skills. He co-founded the influential record label and club night Numbers, and played a key role in shaping the Glasgow Electronic music scene.

The sheriff’s office noted that the death is under investigation, with the cause and manner to be determined following an autopsy. The woman’s identity and age have not been released as authorities work to notify her next of kin. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased,” the sheriff’s office said. “This is the first death reported on the playa this year, and unfortunately, it occurred on the first day,” Allen added.

Burning Man also expressed condolences in a similar statement and mentioned that counseling services are available for those in need. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this loss,” Burning Man’s statement said. The annual festival began early Sunday morning after being delayed for 12 hours due to rain and muddy conditions. Law enforcement reported that approximately 20,000 people were already present on the playa before the gates reopened.

Burning Man will continue until September 2. Although attendance was predicted to be lower this year, organizers still anticipate over 70,000 attendees. Reno Tahoe International Airport noted that Sunday would be its busiest day in two decades, largely due to the influx of people attending Burning Man.

DJ Casper passed away after a battle with cancer

The fight with cancer began in 2016 for DJ Casper. According to ABC7 Chicago, it was in that year that he found out that he had two kinds of cancer, renal and neuroendocrine (kidney and liver). Even during his fight with cancer, DJ Casper still had positivity in every single minute of his life. DJ Casper even mentioned that he hopes the ‘Cha-Cha Slide’ remains a symbol of “unity, community, and positivity”. In one of his last public statements, he said, “Anybody that’s going through cancer, know that you have cancer and cancer does not have you. So, keep on doing the ‘Cha Cha Slide'”.

The past weekend the EDM community surfaced on Twitter and reddit to beg the state of Florida, authorities and Okeechobee organizers for news on the death. According to the Okeechobee county Sheriff’s office investigators are looking into an “apparent drowning” that they say took place between late Friday night and early Saturday morning. 

Nguyen’s family and friends frantically tried to receive information on the speculated events on the weekend from Insomniac events. Their plea was finally answered today. The Okeechobee organizers took to social media to release a statement.

Out of respect to those affected by this tragedy, we have refrained from commenting prematurely. We will continue to provide our full support to the authorities, who are determining the cause.

Born in South London in 1957, Maxi Jazz was a rapper, singer, songwriter, and DJ – an icon in dance music history. He was a founding member and lead vocalist of the electronic band Faithless, which formed circa 1995. He helped the group produce six studio albums over their tenure, including their 1996 debut, Reverence and chart-topping ‘No Roots‘ in 2004, before leaving the band In 2015 to front Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys as both a singer and guitarist. 

Faithless were pivotal to the dance music scene, known for their strong political and social messages as well as their charismatic stage presence. Jazz also provided vocals for artists like Tiësto on his 2006 hit track ‘Dance4life‘ as well Vintage Culture on ‘Commotion‘ earlier this year. His final live appearance with Faithless was at Ibiza Rocks in 2016.
