Markus Schulz has released Nocturnal Voyage, the third installment of his In Search of Sunrise 22 series, out now via Black Hole Recordings. The mix pulls from Sander van Doorn’s Purple Haze alias, Kryder, John 00 Fleming, BT, Guy J, Elias Erium, Mike EFEX, Bart Skils & Weska, and Schulz’s own Dakota project, continuing a franchise that’s been running for more than two decades.

For those unfamiliar, In Search of Sunrise has long served as one of trance music’s most consistent mix compilation series, built around the idea of tracking a night’s arc from dusk through dawn. Schulz took over the franchise’s yearly format as a warm-weather trilogy, with each volume standing on its own while building toward a larger dawn-to-dusk narrative across the year. The 2026 edition has already pulled in names like Above & Beyond, Joris Voorn, VER:WEST, JES, and Paul Oakenfold, alongside returning ISOS alumni Solarstone, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Kyau & Albert, Matt Fax, Jerome Isma-Ae, Kryder, and Daniel Wanrooy.

Where the series’ earlier chapters have leaned into widescreen melodic trance, Nocturnal Voyage pushes into darker, more techno-leaning territory. Schulz describes the mix as a deliberately linear listen — minimal key changes, no big peaks or buildups, with the focus placed squarely on groove and atmosphere rather than euphoric payoff.

“The Nocturnal Voyage is a bold step for the future of In Search of Sunrise, adding another dimension to the melodic progressive and trance sound that has defined the series; one that is predominantly late night and techno-leaning,” Schulz said. “The ethos with this particular journey was a linear approach, specifically to create a hypnotic atmosphere — very few key changes, no big buildups or peaks, but an emphasis on the groove and darker tone, all while harnessing the emotional core that still resonates within an ISOS terrain. It’s for those who love adventure in the night, the weird and wonderful of the afterhours, in the rooms where shadows speak.”

Beyond mixing more than 50 tracks across the full 2026 run, Schulz has been building out a dedicated sonic ecosystem around ISOS itself. The series has become the launchpad for much of his Dakota project’s new output, with three fresh Dakota tracks debuting within the first half of ‘Nocturnal Voyage’ alone. He’s also introduced ISOS-specific aliases, including Aeridan and Shadow Assembly, whose track ‘Eclipse’ sits comfortably alongside the Dakota material.

‘Nocturnal Voyage’ is available as a standalone release starting October 7. On October 23, it will be folded into the complete 3-disc collector’s set alongside the series’ first two chapters, ‘The Awakening’ and ‘Nirvana,’ giving fans the full summer-long journey in one package. A limited-edition vinyl release is also planned.

Yotto has returned with his latest release, ‘Deep Dive,’ teaming up with vocalist Dakota for a melodic house record that balances emotion with peak-time energy. The track pairs a house undercurrent with emotional vocals, making it equally suited for festival stages and late-night club sets.

A Melodic Journey

‘Deep Dive’ builds around a steady groove, warm basslines, and expansive synths that gradually increase in intensity. Rather than relying on a dramatic drop, the track unfolds naturally, allowing its melody and atmosphere to take center stage.

Yotto returns with his latest melodic house single, ‘Deep Dive,’ via MADMINDS.

Meanwhile, Dakota’s vocal performance gives the record its emotional core. Her lyrics use water and drowning as metaphors for vulnerability and connection, creating a sense of longing that fits seamlessly with Yotto’s cinematic production.

The result is a track that feels equally at home during a sunset festival set or a late-night dancefloor moment.

A Familiar Voice

Although some listeners may know her as Dakota, the singer-songwriter also performs under her given name, Sophie Ann Elton. She first gained international recognition as the voice behind Jonas Blue’s breakthrough hit ‘Fast Car’ before becoming a familiar collaborator across electronic music.

Meanwhile, Dakota’s expressive vocals complement Yotto’s production, adding another layer of emotion to the track’s immersive atmosphere.

Another Strong Addition for Yotto

For Yotto, ‘Deep Dive’ continues his signature blend of melodic house and progressive influences. The Finnish producer has built a reputation for creating records that combine emotional storytelling with dancefloor appeal, and his latest release follows that formula with ease.

‘Deep Dive’ marks the first collaboration between Yotto and Dakota.

Whether heard through headphones at home or on a festival sound system, ‘Deep Dive’ delivers a rich, immersive listening experience. As melodic house continues to thrive, Yotto and Dakota have added another compelling record to the genre’s growing catalogue.

This one is a beautiful respectful, and powerful tribute. Props.

We’re excited to share his with you all. NITTI, the GRAMMY-winning artist, has been on a roll lately, experimenting with a unique blend of Rock and Electronic music. And before you look away, trust us — he actually makes it work. Over the summer, he released viral remixes of iconic Rock and Metal anthems, including Slipknot’s ‘Duality’ and System of a Down’s ‘Chop Suey!’.

After experimenting with some Rocktronic tracks, such as ‘Stay Away’ with OUTRAGE and Micah Martin, and ‘White Knuckles’ with BRAYTON, he eventually got to Linkin Park‘s legendary hit, ‘Numb‘. The remix quickly went viral after NITTI shared a video of his friends listening to it, and the demand became so high at one point, we now welcome an official release of this cover on his very own ALT/RAVE label.

‘Numb’

Teaming up with Rock and Metal vocalist Dakota, NITTI created a powerful and emotional rendition of the original ‘Numb’. Dakota’s vocals have often been compared to Chester Bennington’s, adding a special touch to the track. And let me tell you, the vocal range, the timbre, the raspiness, the sentiment, everything’s there. If you needed something special for this weekend, here you go. We’re not gatekeeping this. With Linkin Park’s tour in full motion, this Dance version of ‘Numb’ truly arrives at an opportune time.

Listen to NITTI and Dakota‘s respectful ‘Numb’, by hitting the ‘Play‘ button on the Spotify player below. Also, click here to support the release on your platform of choice.
Good to see you Markus! Your album We Are The Light has just been released. How was it for you to come back to your characteristic uplifting trance, leaving your alter ego Dakota aside for the moment?

Well, actually they both come from the same source of inspiration. When I did the Dakota project, it was a response for everything that was going on in the world. Two years ago, when I kind of started We Are The Light as well, the Orlando shootings, the Vegas shootings, all these things going on in the world, they really affected me very deeply. I can’t even express enough how deeply that affected me, especially because I started my career deejaying at gay clubs, you know! At that time it was the only place you could go and play forward-thinking music, so that really hit me to the core.

The Dakota project was more introverted, is what I am thinking about and who I am, it’s me trying to make sense of everything. But the Markus Schulz’s albums are me writing about us as a community, and with We Are The Light Album is like me rebelling against everything that’s going on and saying ‘enough is enough’. And when I look out at the audiences at a festival, I’m up on stage and I see flags from all over the world, and I see everybody in unity together, the good vibes! We are the light that the world should look at right now, because to see that unity is inspiring, so that’s the whole idea of We Are The Light, it’s like: ‘Let’s not look towards politicians and other people for helping us, we need to be the helping light that the world needs right now’. So like I said, both albums ironically come from the same source – the darkness of what’s going on -, but two very separate and opposite reactions. I’m trying to be inspiring.

One of the tracks from WATL is called 51º11’17″N 10º3’10″E [We Haven’t Lost Our Way]. We know these coordinates mean something very special for you. Could you tell us what they are and what are you looking to convey with this song?

Yeah! The coordinates are to Eschwege in Germany, that’s where I was born. And the message of the song is that over all these years, I haven’t forgotten where I’m from, it’s not just the dedication to the city where I was born, but also a dedication to all the people that I’ve known along the way. I have friends who were there for me. I have one friend who was there for me the first night I’ve ever deejayed, he was there and I’m still friends with him, I still message him every now and then: ‘Hey! This is happening, that’s happening’. You know, they’re doing other things in life, he’s working for Homeland Security in the United States, not doing music at all. Well, he’s got a little DJ set up in his bedroom but that’s what he’s doing. I haven’t forgotten those people, I haven’t lost my way. I still keep in contact and hold dear to me the people that were there when I started, where I come from, that’s kind of the message in that song.

Tonight, you are playing for 6 hours non-stop! Have you prepared any surprises for your fans at ADE?

Well, actually tonight it’s going to be harder because I just did a 10-hour set at Stereo in Montreal, so it’s like I’ve got to figure out what I’m not going to play, more than what I’m going to play! I played from 2 a.m. until noontime just last week in Montreal and it was incredible, so my confidence is really high now! As far as this set, I think it’s going to be amazing because there’s some amazing music, obviously there will be a part of the night where it will be an ode to the We Are The Light album, it will be progressively built to We Are The Light, and then, down the rabbit hole and it will get weird and twisted! So it should be a lot of fun!

Great! We’ll make sure we’ll be there tonight. Are you also attending any other events at ADE just to go and not play?

It’s getting increasingly difficult because all the events are super packed and everything; but for sure I love going out and seeing other DJs, it’s just a matter of having the time. These 4 days, because I’ve been here since Monday, it goes really fast. Most of the events and DJs we try to go see them early in the evening, because I like to discover new talents. A lot of the guys that are having parties, I see them all year long, at all the festivals and everything. But when you see young guys that you’ve heard of playing at an evening party somewhere it’s much easier to go and try and see what they’re all about.

Can you share with us any new collaborations you have coming down the pipeline? What can we look forward to from you this year?

Well, me and Ferry (Corsten) have been talking about doing something again, and we tried to get together for his Unity project but we just haven’t been able to in 2018 to lock down some studio time, but ironically since I finished the album I feel more inspired, it’s almost like there was a weight off of my shoulders, so now, for sure Ferry and I, we played last night together and we were like ‘For sure, we’ve got to do something!’ Even Blackhole was asking me about remixing a legendary artist, and I said: ‘There’s this one song that me and Ferry both love, we should maybe do a remix of it together’; so 100%, me and Ferry are going to do some more stuff next year. If it’s not at the end of this year, definitely at the beginning of next year. And we’re good friends, it’s very easy.

You’ve been active in the industry for almost 30 years. That’s a long way! Do you feel that you have enough time for yourself or sometimes you wish you had a more ‘normal’ life?

You know, my father was a musician, that’s why I was very young when I started in music, very, very young. And when you know what your purpose in life is, when you know this is your purpose in life, it makes it easy, you know! I wake up every morning excited, there’s no better job than to be in the music industry! Every morning, you wake up and you’re just like: ‘-What are we doing today? –Oh, today we are doing interviews, today I have a show, today I’m traveling to the other side of the world!’ Every morning, when I wake up, it’s exciting!

We have one last question for you, and this is a very important one: What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Chocolate chip cookie dough!

Markus Schulz – We Are the Light

After a magnificent run with his Dakota project, Markus Schulz is back releasing music under his own name. Today marks the official release of his latest studio album We Are The Light. The album gets it’s release through the famed Black Hole Recordings. It is a 16-track masterpiece that also features 15 of those tracks in their acoustic form.

Deep breath and embrace. The brand new album, We Are the Light, is finally here. https://t.co/rlvIPHF0lv

This is for you. #WeAreTheLight pic.twitter.com/3GR0L16OBv

— Markus Schulz (@MarkusSchulz) October 12, 2018

Schulz seemingly has gone through hell and back to bring this album to life. On Armin van Burren‘s ASOT885 episode, Schulz had some choice words to say about his latest project:

“When I did the Dakota project last year, it kind of came from a very dark place. I was having all these very dark feelings with all the stuff going on in the world. But with this album, it kind of came from the same place, but it was kind of a statement to say “Enough of this.” We need to be the light, to kind of show the world how beautiful everything can be when we are all together, you know?”

In listening through the entire album, one can’t help but feel the uplifting nature evident in Markus’ message. It begins with the supremely uplifting and new theme song for Transmission ‘The Awakening.’ This track is a classic trance anthem that will have the O2 Arena on cloud-9 in a few weeks. Loads of inspiring vocal tracks throughout, including ‘Road of No Return,’ ‘Heaven,’ and the title track ‘We Are the Light‘.

In a bit of a different twist, one song title is simply coordinates, ‘51º11’17″N 10º3’10″E [We Haven’t Lost Our Way].’ These coordinates when entered lead you to Eschwege, Germany, Schulz’s birthplace. The message with this euphoric track is clear – keep an eye on where you are going, but never forget where you come from.

Later in the album, we finally get the finished products of previous releases. These some of the most powerful vocal tracks in recent memory, and all involve female vocalist royalty. ‘Calling for Love‘ with JES, ‘Breathe Me to Life‘ with fiancé Adina Butar, ‘Safe from Harm‘ featuring Emma Hewitt, and ‘Symphony of Stars‘ with Christina Novelli. That run of tracks will bring even the most hardened souls to the verge of tears.

The final track, ‘Upon My Shoulders‘, is another inspiring anthem that premiered at Dreamstate San Francisco. He told Armin that this was the “hardest track to finish” because it was created as a guitar track. Every move he made, he made it sound worse, and over-produced. It ended up taking about three months to complete. Well, the wait was definitely worth it.

Cover-to-cover, Markus Schulz’s We Are the Light is truly a wonderful step forward for the trance icon. Methodical, pensive, and uplifting, we cannot wait to hear it again and again.

The British native is becoming an integral part of the trance scene. He has gained more popularity and notoriety with every release.

You may have first heard about Davey Asprey with his smash hit ‘The Rapture’ released on FSOE. He has since seen two releases on Armada titled ‘Fallout’ and ‘Fantome’. Asprey was even singled out by Armin van Buuren in 2017 for being one of the hottest new DJs in the trance scene. A praise definitely worth remembering.

His latest track remixes Markus Schulz’s alias, Dakota. The remix sees its release on Schulz’s label Coldharbour Recordings. The track is a perfect indication of Asprey’s unique style. He starts off with a full minute of slow build up before bringing in an uplifting and heavy bass. The melodic chords and uplifting synths blast through the speakers and overtake the listener’s ears with euphoria.

This release comes right in time for Dakota’s performance at Transmission Asia. Be sure to look out for this track during his set and check it out below.

The German-American legend Markus Schulz recently released his third Dakota album “The Nine Skies” and it’s safe to say it’s one of the albums of the year. The dark and spiritual album was first announced at the end of 2016 and eager fans have finally been rewarded for their patience with a stunning release.

Take one look at the cover of this LP and you get an understanding of what the album is about, overarching darkness-to-light.

The tipping point for this album came after the tragic attack on Florida’s Pulse nightclub. “All the shit that’s happened after that has really changed things, but somehow that all seemed to start with Pulse. It just devastated me. Shook me to my core. It woke me up to the idea that, in general, we’re not on the right path. I believe to get us back there, to turn things around, anyone who is able has to do their bit. The Nine Skies is me trying to do mine in really the only way I know how”.

Markus has always seen Dakota not as an alias but as a persona – an identity even. “Sometimes I’m wearing Dakota’s head; other times it’s Markus Schulz’s, he says. Through that division, I’ve found the artistic space to make darker, moodier, deeper music. More exploratory and experimental gear… if that’s where my current state of mind is taking me.

The underlying theme of each of the 18 tracks on the album broadly falls into one of the Skies’ nine realms. “That, cautions Markus, is not something that’s going to be immediately apparent the first time you listen to it. Give it time though, and over subsequent spins I think, you’ll get an ever-greater feel for the transitional passage the album is taking. From Sky.One’s The Follower, transcending right the way over to the ninth Sky: Nirvana.”

The story behind this album, how it originated and what it means to Markus, is simply fascinating. To sum up, “Nine Skies” is astonishing, enigmatic, and thought-provoking. Get your copy of this album here:

Markus Schulz presents Dakota & Koen Groeneveld – Mota-Mota

After announcing that a special project is in the works, Markus Schulz, the founder of Coldharbour Recordings and the host of weekly Global DJ Broadcast, returns with a new production under his alter ego Dakota to deliver some new material. This time, the dark side of Florida-based producer has combined forces with Dutch producer Koen Groeneveld (the man behind ‘Slides’, ‘1981’, ‘Baksteen’ and Spinnin Record’s techno imprint _aBZoluT) on a track titled Mota-Mota.

While you might certainly expect an uplifting track, Mota-Mota is a smoldering Techno-oriented song characterized by a striking rhythm with somber atmosphere, sustained percussive sequence and boisterous horns. The release is the first substance to surface from Dakota’s 2017 ‘The Nine Skies’ project and there will be the release of the expanded edition of ‘Watch The World’ in April as well.

Take a listen and enjoy the ride!

On the heels of our exclusive Markus Schulz interview and story, we wanted to provide the full, uncut version of our talk with him. He had so many interesting things to say about his new track, his career and the state of EDM that we just had publish the whole thing. Enjoy!

1) You’re dropping a new song under your Dakota moniker on Monday called “Cathedral (Montreal)”

“I’m doing this city series concept this year where every month there’s like an important gig that I circle on the calendar where it’s like an inspirational gig and then I’ll dedicate a track to that event, to that city, whatever. That started in January and last month, in September, I played at one of my favorite and one of the last remaining clubs of its kind in the world, Stereo in Montreal, and its much more deeper darker. Anybody that’s ever been there knows exactly what I’m talking about. It’s a certain vibe, a certain thing happens at stereo, so that was obviously circled on my calendar and I wanted to make a track especially for Stereo and that’s what that track is about.

Dakota was my darker alias that I used to release tracks under. So we thought it would be cool to kind of release this under the Dakota alias. The thing is it’s not that I have been doing tracks – Dakota style tracks – during my twelve hours sets or whatever. I make a lot of tracks for those sets, I just never release them and so this is the first time that I have released a proper Dakota track in a while. Like I said it’s not that there hasn’t been new Dakota tracks, it’s just they’ve been living in my sets and haven’t been selling them or anything like that.”

2) What inspired you to release it under that Dakota name?

“Well because the vibe of the track, the vibe of the venue. It’s like whenever I play at Stereo in Montreal it’s usually from like 4 a.m. until noon time or some crazy thing like that you know, so I definitely play a lot more like my Dakota alias. So for me it was like giving a nod to the fact that this is not a normal place where you go and you play your normal festival set. You come to Montreal and to Stereo and you bring something different and unique because it’s one of the last remaining clubs like this in the world where you really can just go down the rabbit hole and just stay there all night.”

3) Why are you so attached to Stereo in general?

“It’s funny, when you look at the club and it’s a very simple club. There’s just something about it. You know it just has that it, when you walk in there you just feel something different. When the crowds showing up you feel something different, and then it just kind of takes on a life of it own. When people go in there, they expect something different as well.”

4) Are planning on coming out with a Dakota album?

“No, not at all. Like I said, I’ve done many tracks under that alias and I’ve done two Dakota albums but the Dakota things I’m just making them and playing them in my sets, so this is the first single that I released under the Dakota alias as a proper Dakota track.”

5) What are some benefits and challenges having more than one moniker?

“I’m making music everyday. I make you know like right now I’m working on the new Markus Schulz album. Right now on my hard drive scanning through I have 40 songs. They’re all in different stages, so of them are just a simple melody, so of them are really rough, so of them are further along then others but the idea is that I have 40 songs. So what do you do with them, so of them fit better for like the New World Punx project, some fit better for the Dakota project, some fit better for Markus Schulz, you know and so on and so forth. But the idea is I never walk into a studio and go I have to make this. I walk into the studio and I create what’s in my heart and then afterwards I look at it and I try and figure out what box to put it in, or what packaging to put it in. Most of the stuff I don’t even release, like some it I’ll just play in my sets and let people wonder what it is and that’s it. The idea is you never walk into the studio and go “I have to make a Dakota track” or “I have to make this” or “I have make that”. You just walk into the studio and just create and let the true art come out.”

6) In my interview with Ferry Corsten 3 months ago, he called you the best DJ in the world. What does this statement mean to you, especially coming from Ferry.

“Wow, Ferry said that? That’s amazing! It’s funny because I was telling Brandon who manages me, Ferry and New World Punx. We were listening to…cause Ferry was in the studio last week writing and he was playing me some of the things that Ferry came up with and I told Brandon, I said “man without a doubt Ferry is the best trance producer out there”. When his mind clicking on all cylinders there’s nobody better. It’s cool for Ferry to say that about me because I feel the same way about him and I think that’s why we click so well, you know what I mean? There’s certain things that he brings to the table, there’s certain things I bring to the table, and we both listen cause we..and at the same time we thrive off each other’s energy. It makes for a great combination, it’s not like two people doing the same thing, we literally do bing…maybe we’re the same style of music but we both bring two different things to the table that makes it really fun and really unique. And on the other side of it we’re just good friends, we just hang out and we have way too much fun.”

7) How instrumental was your seven-year residency at The Works in Phoenix, Arizona?

“It gave me the opportunity to make mistakes and learn what works and doesn’t work. The problem with a lot of these young guys who get thrown onto the mainstage because of a hit record, is they never get to learn what works and what doesn’t work. They’re just thrown up there and play all the Beatport top 10 hits and that’s it. They never got to experience that whole magical journey, that theater of it all. How do you make a grand entrance and leave the crowd wanting more and then in the middle of it just kind of tell a story. That’s what I really learned being a resident for so long. It’s just like…theater. When you’re up on stage it should be theater, not just a generic like “okay here we go”. I’ve heard some of the biggest DJs start off their set with just a fucking kick drum, and it’s like where is the theater in that?! Have you ever seen a major Broadway play and they start off so bland? It’s like come on, this is theater, we’re up on stage, it should be theatrical.”

8) As one of the most prominent artists in the trance world, what do you think of the current state of trance and is there something you would like to do personally to better it and/or where would you like to see it go from here?

“I think that trance has never really gone away. It’s always had an image of like being the anti-social kind of music. But people fucking love this music. There’s nothing that’s as amazing as when you hear that proper melody. When one chord goes to another, I call it “the nerve”. When you strike that nerve with a melody, it’s totally different when you hit a nerve with a drop. You change people’s lives with these melodies, you give people something. I don’t think Trance has ever gone anywhere, I think that a lot of people stopped taking chances and I hear people starting to take chances again. I think it’s in a beautiful place and I think that all the Trance fans out these should really be grateful for what we have and what’s out there because through all of this, through all the EDM fucking bullshit wave, here we are as trance fans, we’re still standing and we’re still unified and it’s amazing because the whole EDM thing has just crashed and burned and to be honest with you it bored me. The first time I heard a cool drop, I was like “oh this is kind cool” but then after hearing it for three or four summer in a row, the same thing “put your fucking hands up” and then some bullshit, I am just so happy to be able to hear that people are going back and trying to find it again, find themselves again and it’s great. I’m super happy.”

9) How does your approach differ when playing on mainstage versus a side stage?

“When you play on a side stage, you can get a little more eclectic. You know that these are your real fans. When you’re playing on a mainstage, it’s almost like a windowshop, you give them a snapshot of who you are as an artist. You play some of the more easily accessible tracks. And at the same time It’s fun because I really focus on trying to create a great show within certain limitations and it can be challenging and fun. When you play on a side stage obviously you’ll know that you’ll have a captive trance crowd and so you kind explore just a little bit more.”

10) You’re playing the Ministry of sound new trance nation minimix. Can you touch on that?

“I just did the Ministry of Sound compilation called trance nation which is a super cool concept that has been going on for a long long time and this year they asked me to do it and it’s been a dream of mine to be able to work with ministry of sound on a compilation like this.”
