And we thought the day would never come… yet here we are! Deep & Progressive prodigy Spencer Brown has teamed up with Wilt Claybourne and, you’d better believe this one, 5-time GRAMMY-winner musical group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, for a frankly jaw-dropping rendition of their 1973 track ‘Awu Wemadoda‘.

Almost half a century after its original release, the amazing vocals of the group saw a boom in a niche they may have never imagined possible: our beloved Electronic Dance Music scene. Spencer and Wilt created a bootleg of the original ‘Awu Wemadoda’ back in 2019, a few weeks prior to Above & Beyond‘s yearly festival Group Therapy. Since Spencer was a part of the lineup, he decided to spice things up, as he explains in the video below:

What started as a bootleg ended as official as it could get: LBM loved the song so much they decided not to allow it as a remix but as a whole collaboration. And here we are, four years from its world premiere, able to say “this song is out today“. Must feel like a dream to Spencer and Wilt, because it truly, wholeheartedly, feels like so to us listeners and followers of their art.

You might be familiar with the news that Spencer is releasing an album pretty soon. Well, we’re pleased to announce that we hit a bullseye on that last article! Read this quote pulled from the album announcement:

“Finally, the opening track is hidden completely, giving the illusion it could be a new alias/band of which Spencer is a part. Maybe, just maybe, it is his ABGT300 opening track, his and Wilt Claybourne’s remix for Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s ‘Awu Wemadoda’. There’s even an “a” at the very end of the line hiding the name. Please, make it happen!“

THEY MADE IT HAPPEN. And we’re so happy that’s the case. Now we get to enjoy this beautiful piece of music. Forever. Oh, and, fun fact, this is, indeed the opening track of Spencer’s Equanimity, which will feature a handful of collaborations and originals.

The song

‘Awu Wemadoda’ starts with Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s haunting original vocals, as clean as they come, completely undisturbed. After the 0:42 mark, the beat comes into play, and it’s everything you’d expect from a duo like Spencer and Wilt: beautiful, peaceful beats and sounds which can do nothing more than complement the vocals. The guys truly do an incredible job.

If you are still reading, and are not yet driven away by the singing, the break coming is beautiful, and it truly is an ode to the 2018-2020 Spencer sound. Honestly, there’s nothing wrong in this track other than its duration: we could listen to it for hours on end!

In the end, ‘Awu Wemadoda’ is as beautiful as the day we heard it for the very first time in Prague. In fact, the song has changed very little, for which we’re eternally thankful. Big hugs, guys.

(Arnej’s Tribute Bootleg Mix)

Emotions have undeniably been running high ever since the premiere of the seventh (and most likely last) denouement of the ‘Fast and the Furious’ series. Furious 7, which was released last Friday, is the sequel to the 2013 film Fast & Furious 6. More importantly however, Furious 7 is the last film in which Paul Walker plays a role in after a fatal car crash took his life on November 30 2013. The film was approximately 80 percent complete at the time of the actor’s death and brothers Caleb and Cody were embraced into the Fast family in order to finish the film.

Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” is a tribute to the late Paul Walker and is part of the Furious 7 soundtrack. Today, Toronto native Arnej released a bootleg of “See You Again” as a way to pay his respects to the star. Arnej said:

The world lost a great human being and life ambassador when Paul Walker tragically passed away. I’ve read many reviews on  Furious 7 and the tribute that the crew paid to him in his honor but I didn’t expect it to be so emotional and inspiring. I just couldn’t help but give my own take on the theme song.

Thanks to a ridiculously large and loyal social media following, CAKED UP has become one of the year’s breakout acts in dance music. Along with performing alongside some of the industry’s biggest names, Oscar Wylde and Vegas Banger have also put out some solid tunes. Unfortunately, their integrity is now being questioned, as a couple of their tracks are strikingly similar to ones previously released by their fellow producers.

Just last week, the duo released what they called ‘a bootleg’ of ‘CoCo’ by O.T. Genasis. Although they gave credit to the rapper, CAKED UP forgot to mention that the edit also featured Jackal‘s ‘Chinchilla’ until they were accused of stealing by G Jones. Ultimately, Wylde ended up stating that it was just a bootleg made for their sets and that he enjoys the tune.

Now, the guys have come under fire yet again due to their remix of Rae Sremmurd’s “No Type”. CAKED UP posted the track earlier in the week and the resemblance to LOUDPVCK & gLAdiator‘s ‘Tony’ is hard to ignore. It’s also worth mentioning that the drop is almost identical to one that was featured in a sample pack after ‘Tony’ was released. These files can be used by anyone, but it is often a sign of laziness and unoriginality. While we’ll let you listen to the evidence below and decide for yourselves, we believe that CAKED UP has some explaining to do.

Lucky for you, LooKas and Kayzo have just provided us with their remix of This Is Halloween and it will leave you with the good kind of goosebumps all over your arms. Marilyn Manson, Panic! at the Disco and many other artists have put their own spin on the song from the classic Tim Burton film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, but it’s safe to say that this trapstyle take on the track is up there with the best of them.

Speaking of nightmares, LooKas is currently in the middle of one, as his SoundCloud account was just taken down due to copyright issues from some of his older bootlegs. We hope that this situation will get sorted out in the near future so that we can get back to listening to the Miami native’s sweet trap productions. Kaskade’s Soundcloud has been home to many of his best mashups and remixes, some of which he put up for free download; he’s had small issues here and there with some of it, but it’s always been directly with the label. He threw out the idea of creating his own portal to post the content he wants to share with us; who knows maybe he’ll end up with a subscription service similar to Deadmau5’s?

It’s a shame that a service that’s there to act as a platform to spread music is cutting the content that makes it so great. Producers and DJs are known for their use of sampling and impressive remixes (and bootlegs), and if you’re “a little guy” or somebody trying to break into the scene, getting noticed is going to get more difficult than it already is. Lucky for Kaskade, Ultra Records actually had his back and the posts should be back up within the next day or so.

Keeping this site free, fair, and legal can’t be easy. Soundcloud has the best intentions with this copyright detection system (plus they have to have it to circumvent the Digital Millennium Copyright Act), but this is really getting out of hand. Something’s gotta give, and there needs to be some serious change to the system. Otherwis they’ll lose their user base and, as Kaskade put it in his tweet, it’ll be the end of an era (and real good one at that).

Ladies and gentlemen, you’re in for a treat with this one. Pogo is back with another installment to his series of unique sampling tunes, and this time he collab’d with Skye and sourced Back to the Future. The name might be new to some of you, but Pogo is by no means a brand new face in the music scene. Based out of Perth, Australia, the 25 year old has been posting these musical creations to YouTube since about 2007, and has developed a dedicated niche following. He’s best known for his movie remixes (yes movie remixes), especially Disney films. The variety is incredible; he’s done mixes for Up, Alice in Wonderland, Monster’s Inc.,  Pulp Fiction, and the Muppets, just to name a few.

It wouldn’t be a far cry to deem him the king of sampling, and we’d be impressed to hear some competition. Mark Ronson really should’ve referenced Pogo in his TEDx talk. Each mix has it’s own special style and vibe since each sample source is so different, giving him the chance to experiment more. This latest mix is laid back and toned down, using vocals and background sounds to meticulously craft the melodies and bassline; the video cuts compliment the music and provide a little sub story as well. We recommend hitting up his YouTube page and checking out all he has to offer and see how he’s grown over the years, but definitely at least give this lil’ mix a listen below.

When making a debut on a big label, there are few better ways to do it than teaming up with the man running the show, so kudos to 3LAU for enlisting Tiësto on a thundering new track titled “Bang” out on Musical Freedom just in time for the summer. The familiar Bloodhound Gang lyrics appearing in the bootleg may seem a bit surprising, but the acapella was actually a very calculated choice from Tiësto. While the powerful, electro instrumental demonstrates 3LAU’s evolution as a big-room house producer, the vocals serve as a light-hearted nod to his earliest roots as a mash-up guru. Few producers have been able to connect past and present as well as Tiësto, and the resulting collaboration delivers a lively, yet playful hit that will certainly be making the rounds this festival season. Part of what makes going to live shows so entertaining is the chance to hear new and unexpected music from our favorite artists. There’s always this sense of anxiousness when looking for that “ID” track in a set, or that faint hope that a mashup track will actually get released (so we don’t have to listen to a cruddy set rip). Often times they never hit the internet though, and we have to wait on the next show to have a chance at hearing it again. Today though, Anjunabeats have gifted us with quite the surprise in the form of Arty’s mashup of his track “Believe” and Above & Beyond’s “You Got to Go”. Arty even mentioned how he never thought this would hit official release. Slotted to drop on March 31st, the mashup is a seamless combination of Zoë Johnston’s smooth vocals and the uplifting melodies of the instrumentals in Believe. Above & Beyond debuted it in Australia last year and drew an enthusiastic reaction from fans and from us, and we’re quite thrilled to now be able to take the track with us wherever we may go (come March 31st, that is).
