The video in question shows a giant animated version of Beyoncé walking through the Las Vegas skyline and then playfully picking up the Sphere. Lawyers for Dolan’s company, Sphere Entertainment Group (SEG), sent Beyoncé’s team a cease-and-desist letter, claiming the video infringes on their intellectual property rights.

According to the letter, the depiction has led people to think Beyoncé might be planning a residency at the Sphere. The lawyers stated that SEG never gave permission for the Sphere to be shown and manipulated in the video. They’ve given Beyoncé a Monday deadline to stop using the imagery in her videos, merchandise, and promotional materials.

It was previously reported that Beyoncé’s plans for a Sphere residency fell through last year. Apparently, the venue couldn’t accommodate her request for two weeks of rehearsal time, and there were also disagreements over the cost of a high-tech production. Now, she’s reportedly considering a deal with MGM, a rival of the Sphere.

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour just kicked off in California and includes stops in major cities like Chicago, Houston, and London. The Sphere Entertainment Group warned that if Beyoncé doesn’t comply with their demands, they will take further legal action.

That’s right, Beyoncé’s ‘Break My Soul‘ as well as her entire Renaissance album beat out Diplo, David Guetta, Bonobo, KAYTRANADA, RUFUS DU SOL, and ODESZA for the win, much to the disappointment of EDM producers everywhere.

But she didn’t stop at EDM, the crossover artist also won Best Traditional R&B Performance for ‘Plastic Off The Sofa’ and Best R&B Song for ‘Cuff It’. This puts her at a lifetime total of 32 Grammy Awards, breaking the record for most Grammy Award wins in history, previously held by classical musician Georg Solti with 31 Grammy Awards.

While Beyoncé’s win is controversial, the artist did try to pay homage in her speech to the “the queer community” for their “love and inventing the genre.” And last August, she released a remix package for ‘Break My Soul,’ including cuts from will.I.am, Honey Dijon, Nita Aviance, and Terry Hunter, a nod to pioneers of the house music genre.

This means a lot of different things. 

Firstly, that dance music is becoming more popular. In a bottom up fashion, the ticket sales and digital plays of traditionally underground or niche electronic music artists is becoming more and more prominent among casual listeners. Large record companies and radio stations have less of a say of the music we choose as streaming continues to dominate the industry. Intelligent music-biz folks, likely have seen this trend, and are championing Beyonce to cash in on the rising popularity of EDM. 

Beyonce’s Renaissance, is a musical triumph that will have influence on future works that range from dance to pop to rhythm and blues. When played from beginning to end, the album flows like a DJ set with micro-moments inside and between songs where it becomes difficult to know where one song ends and the other begins. Shit is smooth. Renaissance draws inspiration and samples from beloved works of historic house music and celebrated artists from the past. The work of Renaissance is certainly worthy of recognition. 

But this begs the question, what then is popular music? Beyonce, with her massive and broad appeal, is placed in the dance category… while Nikki Minaj, who by all means should be considered in rap, is continuously moved into pop and other genres where she will not likely win. And what then is the point of the Grammys? What constitutes best? If we are to give the dance award to the one who has access to the most resources and best team, then we give it to Beyonce. What about RUFUS and ODESZA? She will almost always outshine the lesser known artists who also deserve a share of the spotlight (unless you are Beck).

The “Best”

Music is something so deeply personal and subjective. It is colored by our life experiences, moods, and feelings. Who am I to say that someone is the best? I would even posit that when it comes to music, there is no objective “best”. Sure we can look at record sales, radio plays, and artist collaborations. But all the extraneous statistics don’t mean anything if that song doesn’t hit you in the heart and free you.

So if Beyonce’s team wants to dabble in Electronic Music, so be it. John Mayer released a country album Paradise Valley in 2013. And Taylor Swift was a country star until she decided she wasn’t. More and more the blurred lines of genre escape boundaries, and defy categorization. The important thing here is to allow space for new artists to enter the public consciousness while celebrating the veterans who have earned their keep. 

It’s all just music baby. In the face of all these awards, pomp, and circumstance, don’t forget you are the one who gets to press play.

She has successfully released EPs, singles, and remixes for some music industry stalwarts like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Noisia. Her curation knows no bounds, and she has an impressive discography that deserves much clout.

Following ZHU’s ‘Coral.PINK‘ show at Lollapalooza’s 2020 Virtual festival, we are happy to see a new single by him. He continues to show us how impressive he can be when it comes to performing and his craft. Whether or not you find ZHU’s vibe within this track, it’s still a great song to add to your summertime playlist. We are digging all these new summer anthems and season-ending dance tracks. As we make our way into fall, we’ll see what these guys have next in-store.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Diplo was asked about the multitude of things. The three-time Grammy winner stated that he expects to get three more awards this year, and we are really rooting for him. Diplo collaborated with Beyoncé on The Lion King’s soundtrack and also remixed the 2019 hit ‘Old Town Road‘. But what really had our ears tingling was the things he had to say about Jack Ü.

The interviewer asked about the multiple teases Diplo has released about the project. The producer stated that the project could be banding together again sometime next year. He also talked about the fact that Skrillex is sitting a bunch of a new music! Nothing really specific, but one can only hope.

While this is possibly a longshot, since Diplo only said that the return could be next year, he also stated he has been working on multiple ideas for the project. Making clear that he is not rushing anything, the Mississippi native assures he is just waiting for Skrillex to be ready. We hope you guys are as excited as we are. This could be huge.

Travis Scott last performed at Coachella in 2017. This coming after his massive release of Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight album. This upcoming Coachella we can expect a lot of new songs as well as a nice amount from his most recent album ASTROWORLD.

Frank Ocean is making a long-awaited return to Indio, California. He last performed in 2012 after the release of his channel ORANGE album. Frank has released a fair amount of singles over the last few years and should treat the Indie crowd nicely.

Rage Against the Machine will reunite following a nine-year hiatus. It will be quite the return for the rock band. The band is made up of Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. Their reunion is quite fitting as the band headlined the first-ever Coachella in 1999.

Compared to years past I would say these headliners are not all too big. Travis Scott is clearly the most popular out of the three. Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, and Tame Impala headlined the 2019 lineup. The festival has had headliners in the past including Eminem, The Weeknd, Calvin Harris, and Beyonce. Music Festivals have the power to change our lives. If you have gone to one, you probably connect with that statement. They may provide us with a different outlook on life or make us fall in love with a specific artist. According to a recent study done by Cloud Cover Music, Ultra is the most life-changing festival since Woodstock. That is a pretty bold statement with all the incredible festivals out there.

They surveyed 665 music fans who have attended music festivals. They asked all the important questions like which one was your favorite? Did the music festival change your life? 63% of the respondents said yes to a festival permanently changed their life.

Woodstock took the #1 spot with 82.4% of people feeling their life has been altered. The highest modern-day festival is Ultra with 78.4%. And right behind them is EDC with 74.5% of people feeling their life was transformed because of the festival.

It’s no doubt that Woodstock has had the most effect on people. It was a festival that changed social and cultural boundaries. You can’t really compare Ultra to Woodstock. You can, however, compare Ultra to the other EDM festivals on the list. Arguments could go on for days for who is the best festival. An interesting note is that Tomorrowland did not appear in the top ten, could be just Americans were polled and that is the reason.

Cloud Cover Music also came to some other conclusions from the survey. The most memorable festival act was Red Hot Chili Peppers. Our very own Tiesto came in at #5. They also found the festivals have actually gotten less wild than back in the day. Drug use, nudity, and violence have all declined since the 80s. Of course, people may just not want to admit to those first two. Drinking, however, has actually increased among festival goers.

Burning Man was rated the most indulgent festival when it comes to alcohol/hard drugs. They were also rated best place to form new friendships. EDC was rated most spiritual and artistic festival.

Tough to say which festival is actually the most life-changing after Woodstock. 665 participants are probably not enough considering millions attend festivals each year. Which festival do you find has changed your life the most?
