The NYT also emphasized on the growth of the total value of global EDM per year which, is now $6.9 billion (a 50% increases since 2013). The analyst Kevin Watson, notes that as recently as 2010, EDM’s audience was so marginal that it wasn’t even listed as a separate genre in Nielsen’s SoundScan report. Last year however, it EDM ranked as the fourth most popular streaming genre in the United States.

Forbes began tracking DJ pay in 2012, and, since then, the total earnings of the Top 10 have grown from $125 million in 2012 to $274 million last year (120% increase). These DJs have become celebrity personalities,

Even with the documented rise in EDM music, the New York Times still notes that one should be careful not to “overstate the mass appeal of electronic music.” The recent major studio release of “We Are Your Friends,” with Zac Efron, bombed at the box office earning a mere $1.8 million on the opening weekend — the worst debut on record.

First, a 17-year old female attendee, Lauren Plunkett, has gone missing. The reportedly white, slim girl with shoulder length hair, was last seen in the vicinity of The National Bowl outside the Xscape building around 1AM on July 11th, wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie.

“If anyone has any information about Lauren’s whereabouts, recognises her description, or believes they may have seen Lauren then please call police immediately on 101. Secondly, two men were assaulted and STABBED during the event and police believe they may be linked as the offender was described in similar ways and the incidents happened in close proximity.

“The first incident happened at around 3:30pm, when a 21-year-old man was stabbed. The incident took place on the embankment by gate six of the venue, when the victim was laying down on the grass. He was approached from behind by the offender, who then committed the offence. The victim was admitted to Milton Keynes Hospital and has since been discharged.

The second incident took place around 6pm, when a 27-year-old man sustained puncture wounds to his stomach following an altercation. The incident happened near the bar on the audience’s left side of the venue when facing the stage. The altercation took place here. The victim in this incident has also been discharged from MK Hospital after receiving treatment for his wounds.” – Citiblog

Criminal issues are not out of the ordinary at at music festivals, however the violent incidents do seem abnormal at EDM events where peacefulness and friendliness are the standard vibe. As UKF states: “It’s every festival lover’s worst nightmare and goes against everything that events like these are trying to achieve.”

Safety should be a top priority and hopefully no more issues such as these pop up in future events.

Dudek claims that not only did Guetta profit from the sales of his record, but he gained notoriety and business opportunities from it, referencing the song’s use in a T-Mobile ad. He filed for 6$ million in damages along with an injunction to stop any further sales or distribution of the allegedly infringing song. He claims that his song is identical to Guetta’s song including the written version.

At this moment is unclear whether David Guetta has responded to the lawsuit or what the result of it will be. We’re currently searching for a version of Dudek’s song.

Reportedly, Victoria had been celebrating her 19th birthday and under the influence of MDMA. She was a sophomore at Coastal Carolina University with aspirations of Marine Biology. Sadly this kind of tragedy is not an isolated incident. This would be the second MDMA-related death within two years at Echostage, the first being 19-year old Shelley Goldsmith of the University of Virginia who collapsed back in the summer of 2013.

Shelly’s shocking death came on the same day two others died from overdosing on molly at the Electric Zoo music festival on Randall’s Island in New York in 2013. The toxicologist showed that the patrons had taken a fatal mix of MDMA and methylone, a closely related stimulant that is also sold under the name molly – commonly used to cut MDMA, law enforcement officials say.

This news always comes as a shock to the dance music community, as their legacy should be of young scholars enjoying themselves and the music they love rather than dying from an illicit drug. “Shelley deserves a legacy of being someone who cared for people, someone who achieved, someone who contributed, and not a druggie who died,” her father, Robert Goldsmith. With Victoria’s recent death, there may need to be a spark for open dialogue about safety and electronic dance music.

Shelley’s mother, Dede Goldsmith, attempted to start that open dialogue. Shelley’s death prompted her to start the Amend The Rave Act movement. As she stated, Shelley was an honor student who was an inspiration to all those around her, not just a drug statistic. What Amend the Rave Act desires is to emphasize harm reduction at these kinds of events, alongside all the law enforcement measures. Too many young people are dying and the 2003 RAVE Act could be part of the problem since it prevents the implementation of common sense harm reduction measures at these events.

What exactly does the RAVE Act do? In essence, it made it easier for venue owners to be prosecuted for maintaining “a drug-involved premises.” However, in a practical sense, the language has created a dangerous situation by discouraging legitimate concert and festival organizers from enacting common sense safety measures to protect their patrons — free water, well ventilated and air conditioned, drug education, and other harm reduction services that could possibly save lives.

Of course, it purely isn’t just legislation and policy that contributes to young people’s deaths at these events but a multitude of factors. As you enjoy this festival season and see your favorite artists, be keen on educating yourself and understanding what measures to take in keeping you, your friends, and your family safe.

James Barton comes in at #1, as the man in charge of Live Nation.  This English native put Live Nation at the top of the food chain when it comes to festivals, tours, and concerts. One of Live Nation’s fastest expanding branches is EDM and Barton said his favorite music festival is EDC Las Vegas, coming up next weekend. Thomas Wesley Pentz (Diplo) takes 2nd as a producer, DJ, and owner of Mad Decent. This is no surprise as he commonly produces with notable superstars including Madonna, Justin Bieber, and Skrillex, as well as growing new acts like Zeds Dead and Yellow Claw. Even producing two of the top tracks of 2015, ‘Lean On’ as Major Laser, and “Where are Ü Now” as Jack Ü.

Pasquale Rotella ranks 3rd, as the owner of Insomniac and producer of Electric Daisy Carnival (Live Nation owns 50% of Insomniac, purchased at $50 million). Sonny Moore (Skrillex), a prolific producer, headlining DJ, and owner of the OWSLA imprint. Billboard reported Skrillex as playing 200 shows a year.

A video posted by deadmau5 (@deadmau5) on May 30, 2015 at 2:05am PDT

The second and longer video shows Deadmau5, Tommy Lee, and Tory Belleci on their fireworks shopping spree. They appear to impulsively buy $400 dollars worth of explosives and head to the desert to light them up – for science, of course. After all, you’re never get too old to set off some explosives in the desert. The video captures more of Deadmau5, Lee and Belleci’s reactions and less of the fireworks the audience would have seen. You may view the clip below.

It’s not everyday we see superstar musicians present us the weather. This week, world-famous DJ and the producer of A State of Trance, Armin Van Buuren stopped by at a local FOX news station in New York to help deliver the weather. While Audrey Puente was casually presenting the weekly forecast, Armin slowly makes it on screen and awkwardly assists her through the segment while promoting his new single “Another You“. Armin was recently performing at EDC New York this past Memorial Day Weekend and stayed a few extra days for the campaign. You can catch Armin’s attempt at being a weatherman below.
