Miami Beach Commissioners Reject Proposed Curfew, Relief for MMW & Ultra

Just decided moments ago, the Commissioners of Miami Beach City voted 4-3 in favor of rejecting the proposed spring break curfew for next week after 2 shootings in South Beach. Both instances were deadly and occurred over a span of 36 hours. The emergency meeting was held at 4PM EST today.

M2 Miami’s Charlotte Underwood has released a relieving statement just now:

“We’re extremely pleased that we’ll be able to open this week, we’ve been working around the clock to deliver a next level nightclub experience to South Beach and we are looking forward to opening our doors on Wednesday!

Regarding the incidents

The first shooting happened Friday night in the area of 7th Street and Ocean Drive. Officers in the area heard gunshots and then found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both men were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Unit, where one died. The second man was later released from the hospital.

The second shooting took place early Sunday morning in the area of 11th Street and Ocean Drive. One man was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died. A second person was treated on the scene.

On the curfew

The decision to not go through with the curfew is huge for this weekend’s Ultra Music Festival and the whole of Miami Music Week — shows are set to begin this week. If a midnight curfew had been passed, it would have impacted many of the events and possibly UMF itself. Take a look at what would have been implemented from the proposed plan here.

Many workers and business owners turned out to the emergency meeting to fight the proposed curfew – the production crew of M2 doing their part to make sure their voices are heard. Thankfully, we are in the clear for 2023.
