Romy Teams Up With Fred again.. Once More For ‘Strong’

Romy, frontwoman and guitarist from The xx, teams up with Fred again.. for ‘Strong‘. This track first played at gigs and festivals this past summer. Also, this marks Romy’s second song on her own since ‘Lifetime‘ and the duo’s last collaboration ‘Lights Out‘. Did you catch Fred’s teaser of their collaboration on Boiler Room?

So, this track makes you pulsate with its dance beats. Inspired by the classic 90s house sound, it attributes to the community and comfort of the club. With Romy’s vocals and Fred’s emotive production, the track comes alive as a beautiful ballad. When Fred said he was releasing new music, he surely meant it and we are here for it. Additionally, Romy created ‘Strong’ during a time when she was processing past grief. Watch the official music video here, shot by Romy’s wife.

Whilst writing the lyrics I was thinking about my cousin Luis, we both have the shared experience of our mums passing away when we were young. I recognise in him the same trait I have which is to try and hold emotions down and put on a brave face. The song was a way to connect with these feelings, offer support and ultimately find a sense of release in the euphoria of music.

Luis is with me on the single cover and in the music video too which was really special. My friendship with Fred means a lot to me, our closeness helps me to feel safe to be honest and vulnerable lyrically and we definitely connect over our love of songwriting and emotions in dance music. It’s amazing and inspiring seeing and hearing what Fred is doing in his solo work and I’m very excited to be releasing this song together.
