Spitfire Audio Releases a New Free Plugin Called Tape Piano

Spitfire Audio just released a new plugin for free. The ‘Tape Piano‘ is a freebie part of the Labs series of virtual instruments available for Windows and Mac. It joins a whole set of other instrumentation such as percussion, pipe organs, guitar harmonics, the mandolin, etc. Let’s take a look at what this new plugin is capable of.

Spitfire Audio started by sampling a modern upright piano, then processed the recordings using vintage tape machines to generate its characterful lo-fi sound. The plugin features a variation slider that lets users move from “warm and wobbly” to “gritty and unpredictable”. Moreover, it features some basic effects like tape looping and echoes and even a magnetic card reader.

Spitfire uploaded a short video on Youtube explaining the thoughts behind the Tape Piano. Check it out below.

The plug-in is completely free and is available as VST2, VST3, AAX, and AU, so it can be used directly in any DAW. To download the plugin, you will need the Spitfire Audio app, which is also free. This tool is very useful for new producers who don’t want to spend big bucks on a good third-party plugin, and even for more advanced ones and professionals because it is that good.

This release comes in the middle of a slew of releases from Spitfire Audio. As a matter of fact, the team just released the latest addition to its Abbey Road One: Film Scoring Selections sample library series, Thematic Horns.

If you intend to download the Spitfire Audio Tape Piano plugin, keep an eye out for future add-ons. For the moment you can grab it here.
