Remember the UK’s first socially distanced music venue, Virgin Money Unity Arena? Tragically, it has closed due to a spike in COVID-19 cases. Because of this, all remaining shows have been canceled.
While rumors say it may not be totally attributed to the venue, the fact is that the virus is still among us. And for that, all things must come to an end…again. The arena had a good run last month with a plethora of outdoor concerts throughout August and September. The socially distanced platforms seemed like a good idea to combat the rules. Though, it looks like the air is now an added mode of transmission.
The arena’s lineups boasted Two Door Cinema Club, Sam Fender, The Libertines, Maximo Park, and more. The event organizer, Steve Davis, commented the following:
We’re honoured to have been able to provide a little happiness and joy to thousands of music and comedy fans throughout the region and the UK in what has been such a tough 2020 for everyone. We have complied with all government guidance to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our audience, artists and crew throughout. We’d like to thank all who attended these genuinely heart warming and uplifting events. For the last six weeks, Newcastle has been the leading light for the live music industry and for that, we should all be very proud.”
Whether it was not wearing a mask, lack of sanitation, or anything else, it seems that we still need to figure out logistics. With only four months left of the year, it’s ok to get antsy. We feel it but we’ve started to see promotions for next year’s events. Given enough time and trials, I think that we can get to a place where events may happen safely again.
It may be different but one thing is certain: music unites us all. From the drive-ins to the virtual events and livestreams, there is nothing that can stop the passion. Let’s applaud the effort, encourage the future, and keep on keeping on.
