New York City Cancels NYE Celebrations for the First Time in 114 Years

The iconic New York Times Square ball drop will not take place this year as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the country. New Year’s Eve officials cancel the event amid fears that it could lead to a mass spread of the coronavirus.

For the first time in 114 years, the world will not see the historic ball drop in New York to bring in the new year.

According to Daily Mail, Times Square will be closed off by the NYPD on December 31. Those at the venue for broadcasting purposes are the only ones allowed on sight.

In substitute for the traditional event, Americans will be welcomed into 2021 with a virtual show. In addition, organizers will provide viewers with an app to watch the countdown to the new year from home.

According to a teaser shared by the Time Square Alliance, the organizers of the event, the ball drop will now be a virtual affair. Therefore, Americans will still have the chance to bring in the new year while following the long-standing tradition.
