New ABBA Songs on the Horizon

Yes, you read that right. That ABBA. The same ABBA inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 with over 150 million records sold worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Music lovers have been listening to ABBA for decades. I remember having their CDs play in my house all the time. Somewhere in my iTunes lives an ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits copy. I’ve seen the musical on Broadway, which is still running. I’ve also watched both MAMMA MIA movies starring the legendary Meryl Streep and allowed one or two songs to slip into my cleaning playlist. By no means am I a super fan, but to deny ABBA has been part of many of our lives in one way or another would be a bit obtuse.

Music in the Works

ABBA is planning to finally release new music after thirty-five years. Since 2018, fans have known that the group has been brainstorming in the studio. There have been many sources confirming new music on the horizon, including Björn Ulvaeus, one of the members of the iconic Swedish group. He has mentioned music releases in both print and video interviews, although no concrete release date has been set yet.

Back in 2018, ABBA posted on Instagram about two new songs as well as a special experience: an avatar tour project. The two-hour show would simulcast around the world with the use of new virtual technology to create the experience. Maybe we’ll get to see some holographic technology? We won’t rule that out.

Fast forward a year and fans are still waiting for the music they were promised. In September of 2019, Björn confirmed in an interview on ITV News that the group was back in the studio. Although he did not confirm nor deny whether an album was in the works, at least we know that new music IS coming. Best not to rush magic.

ABBA Status Update

Regarding the latest news, it seems like the group is getting closer and closer to a release date. Group member Benny Andersson said in an interview that music should be coming “after the summer”; however, he also expressed the decision is not up to him, but rather a group effort.

One shouldn’t promise anything, but if I were to decide myself, it would be September.

Whether it be a whole album or just two songs under the mark of 2020, it will be enchanting nonetheless to see this global icon supergroup come back. Stay tuned for more updates!
