Mixcloud Launches Fan-To-Creator Subscription Service, “Mixcloud Select”

Today, it seems as if we have a hundred different music subscription services to choose from, ranging in price and service. Whether you use Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Music (and that’s just to list a few), we all want to support our favorite artists and explore new music. Mixcloud, the UK-based streaming service and Soundcloud rival, has launched its own subscription service named “Mixcloud Select” with a new goal in mind.

Compared to other streaming services, Mixcloud Select gets more specific. It will allow users to subscribe to artists and channels they enjoy the most. And don’t worry, you’ll still be able to download offline music for those long plane rides! The base price starts at $2.99 a month, but artists will be able to change the price as needed.

This artist subscription service is similar to how users can pay to subscribe to their favorite channels on YouTube. In return, they receive special content and opportunities from the creator. Having this type of subscription service on Mixcloud will allow listeners to directly support their favorite artists, just through subscribing to them.

For now, the new service will only be open to about 47 artists and labels. Notable creators like Afrojack and Axwell’s Axtone Records will lead the way with this new service. The rest of the creators may now register online to join Select, which should be available to the remaining creators in 2019.

What do you think of this concept and is it enough to make you switch? Unfortunately, if you have a long list of your favorite artists, paying to subscribe to each one will come with a hefty price. Overall, it will be interesting to see how Mixcloud Select will compete with rival streaming platforms.
