Pretty Lights Announces First Album in Three Years

Colorado born producer Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, just gave his rabid fan base the best Christmas present they could ask for. In an interview with the Denver Post, Smith announced that the album is scheduled for an early 2017 release, and will not just be a traditional music record, but will be accompanied by a film as well:

“I’m trying to make a film and a record that’s really about the connection of people — the amazing things that happen between people on the same frequency. It will be an episodic thing that makes a full piece. Every song has an episode.”

This new record will mark the first full length album for Smith since 2013’s Color Map of the Sun. While he has released just one single in the last few years, Smith has stayed at the top of the game with his live show—both as a DJ and with his live band. Smith says each episode of the film is connected with one of the live shows he performed on his Episodic Festival tour this past summer and fall:

It connects to my episodic music festival. When I was booking that tour, I wanted to call it “The Weekend’s Episodic Festivals.” I didn’t know why I wanted to call it that, but it’s all going together. Every festival, we’d have a film shoot that became the building blocks of these episodic film pieces. It’s pretty (cool).

A release date is yet to be announced, but Smith did suggest the possibility of an April 20th release. Pretty Lights’ announcement adds to what is already looking like an exciting start to 2017 for music. We will keep you updated on Pretty Lights’ new album as more information is released.
