When you bring up deadmau5 in conversation, people tend to have mixed reactions. Regardless of what you may think about his social media interactions, his music is a part of the reason why dance music evolved into a mainstream music genre. Joel awed and inspired millions of music listeners, while curating some of the most talented artists in the world. He even lead alot of our own electronic music awakenings.

Today 10 years ago, deadmau5 released “Faxing Berlin”. The track was a part of the album Random Album Title and was the first ever release on mau5trap. It made the Billboard dance music charts for 12 weeks, peaking at position six. Random Album Title was soon seen as deadmau5’s breakthrough album. His success and popularity grew tremendously with the release of For Lack of a Better Name and 4×4=12.

As I sit here and listen to “Faxing Berlin” on repeat, I cry tears of joy. I think back on all the amazing experiences I’ve had, people I’ve met, and places I’ve been. Joel is partially responsible. He sparked my interest in dance music and set me down a path for which I am truly grateful. Surely this news and song brings a similar realization to some of you.
