WOKE – The Lavishments of Light Looking (featuring George Clinton)
In a massive collaboration of experimental musicians, Flying Lotus, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, and P-Funk mastermind George Clinton unite as WOKE, to produce a frenzied-left-field track called, “The Lavishments of Light Looking”. This huge piece of exploratory music comes courtesy of the ever reliable Adult Swim Singles program. This year’s singles include tracks by Danny Brown & Clams Casino, Yung Lean, and Shabazz Palaces, but is headlined by the epic emergence of WOKE.
“The Lavishments of Light Looking” is harmoniously characterized by all the elements of each artist seamlessly pieced together into one cohesive track. The compatibility between Flying Lotus and Thundercat is well versed across both artists’ careers, but the further addition of Shabazz Palace’s verses and George Clinton’s musical range from R&B, soul, and funk forms a cacophonous song neatly held together by Flying Lotus’ syncopated beat-making and Thundercats bubbling bass, which never presents on itself but is intricate, compositional, and almost always a little funky.
