CHVRCHES Cover Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean’ on BBC Radio 1

Justin Bieber’s single ‘What Do You Mean‘ immediately rose to the top of the charts when it was released on August 28th. The song represented a shift in style for Bieber that everyone seems to love, including indie-electronic group CHVRCHES. During their appearance in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, the trio surprised with a live dance-y remix of ‘What Do You Mean’ that gives the tune a completely different feel, while not compromising the integrity of the original.

The whole tune takes a complete 180 under the control of CHVRCHES, opting for simplistic upbeat keyboard chords in replace of the tropical flute of the original. The most obvious difference is the vocals; Lauren Mayberry delivers the lyrics with an energy not found in Bieber’s version, creating a truly transformative remix. So far this is the first remix/cover of ‘What Do You Mean’ that we have come across, and the bar is now set very high for others who may plan on remixing it as well.
