Mystery Skulls Plays his ‘Best Set in LA’ at the El Rey Theatre

Mystery Skulls
The El Rey Theatre is a great venue for any show. The nostalgic ambiance and large interior boasts a great view for all, and last friday night, that view was of an incredibly talented Texas transplant that goes by the name of Mystery Skulls.

Born Luis Dubuc, the 28 year old DJ/producer/artist is now based in LA, signed to Warner Brothers Records. Crediting the influence of many different artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, Daft Punk, the Gap Band and Slayer, it’s clear that Dubuc has an eclectic and wide appreciation for music. Which, is no surprise, considering he started his music career playing the drums with a local band. As time went on, Dubuc found a passion in electronica and developed his first alias, The Secret Handshake. From there, his electronic music career took off. By 2009, he’d recorded his 3rd album which ranked #7 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” chart.

In 2011, The Secret Handshake was ready to move on, reinventing himself as Mystery Skulls with a 4-track self-titled EP. Since then, he is working the Los Angeles scene with residency at the Bootleg Theatre. He’s played with Avicii, Chromeo and Chic on select dates, and ultimately sealed his deal with Warner Brothers following an amazing performance at Brokechella Festival in 2013. Now, the “one-man-band” is developing his debut album with legendary Nile Rodgers, who was most recently credited with his guitar contributions to Daft Punk’s recent hit, “Get Lucky.”

It’s important to appreciate an artist like Mystery Skulls, who brings so much talent to the table. His sound gives a modern vibe to an indie/electronica sound, with the addition of his own soulful vocals. It’s no wonder he would be selected to participate in Art Basel this past December, as he is outstandingly creative. On Friday, the LA crowd showed great appreciation for Dubuc, roaring with cheer at times and never standing still. And as his set came to an end at the El Rey, Skulls showed love for his audience that night, claiming that it was his “best set in LA.” No way we could disagree!
