Meet Galaxia, Burning Man’s Temple for 2018

Black Rock City’s 2018 Temple Is Out Of This World

Burning Man is one of the most illustrious and beloved events in the world of art and music. People from across the globe gather in Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada to erect a temporary city. For nine days attendees explore themselves through art, music, dance and community.

With incredible art installations, art cars roaming across the desert that often play music and explore the depths of deep playa with old and new friends alike and so much more, Burning Man is a truly unique and free space. The festival has just announced its plans for the 2018 Black Rock City Temple: Galaxia.

The Temple is described by Burning Man as “a place of refuge, mourning, and healing.” Running with this year’s theme of “I, Robot,” Galaxia is straight out of sci-fi lore. The name and idea stems from the Foundation series by famous sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov. “Galaxia celebrates hope in the unknown, stars, planets, black holes, the movement uniting us in swirling galaxies of dreams”.

Created by Arthur Mamou-Mani, the 2018 temple design represents “the ultimate network, the fabric of the universe connecting living beings into one entity”.This sentiment fits in perfectly with both the 2018 theme and Burning Man’s overarching goal.

As is with Burning Man tradition, Galaxia will have a limited lifespan. As the final part of the festivities, the temple will be burnt to ashes on the final Saturday of the event. This cathartic release signals the end of the festival, leaving behind negativity and material possessions.

If you want to see Galaxia in earnest, you’ll need to get to Burning Man in 2018. The event runs from August 26th through September 3rd.
