Jimmy Iovine Discusses Interscope, Apple Music, Beats & More

Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records & Beats by Dre, recently sat down with Complex Music to discuss his origins in the music industry, Apple’s purchase of Beats, and his transition from record producer to label executive, among other topics. Iovine’s interview is Part One of Complex’s new feature interview series The Blueprint.

Iovine has had a highly successful career, from his beginnings as a record producer for the likes of Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, U2, and Bruce Springsteen among many more. As his career progressed, he took on new ventures including his founding of Interscope Records, a highly successful label that became known for signing “risky” acts that no other record labels wanted to get involved with. In their early days, Interscope’s lineup included Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Tupac, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. His most notable working relationship has been with Dr. Dre; the partnership between Iovine & Dre was recently documented by HBO in the docu-series The Defiant Ones. Iovine and Dre went on to found headphone and speaker company Beats, which was eventually purchased by Apple for $3.2 Billion.

Complex Chief Content Officer Noah Callahan-Bever covers all the bases above, as well as Iovine’s approach to each pursuit he took on as part one of Complex’s Blueprint series. You can check out the full interview below, and we highly recommend checking out The Defiant Ones, accessible through HBOGO.
