Mat Zo – Self Assemble

On Friday, March 25, Mat Zo finally released his widely anticipated sophomore album Self Assemble through his label Mad Zoo. Prior to the big date, the British producer released “Sinful” feat. I See Monstas and “Soul Food“. While these two songs carry the same groovy air about them that many of Mat Zo’s beloved songs do, they are part of a larger picture that can only be understood after listening to the whole album.

Self Assemble was written with the intention of allowing others to get a glimpse inside the marvelous Mat Zo’s complex mind. It truly is a masterpiece of a composition that does more than just please the ears; it tells a story about a worried individual who sees troubling realities in our world. Tracks such as “Order Out of Chaos” and “Ruffneck Bad Boy (VIP)” showcase darker, more violent emotions while those like “Patterns Emerging” and “Killing Time” portray the message that light must always be found in the darkness.

Standing alone, those songs already say so much about what Mat Zo believes. But after listening to the album in its entirety, you can really see what he is telling his audience. In an interview with Billboard, he stated, “I wanted it to be like a score for a movie that doesn’t exist. No matter how hard I tried making that score, it just turned into something very personal. In the end, it’s just a story about my life over the last three years.”

He stated that he wanted to create something permanent and long-lasting, and so he did. Self Assemble may be dark and twisted, but it is the revelation and truth that everyone could use a little spoonful of.
