Every year, DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ list is met with a new storm of controversy and public condemnation. This year was especially galling, as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike won with the help of their notoriously aggressive marketing campaign. The duo hired representatives with iPads to urge Tomorrowland attendees to vote on the DJ Mag list, with the caveat that Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike were in the number one spot. With the DJ Mag list losing a sizable chunk of its rapidly withering credibility, other publications have taken up the mantle and made their own rogue lists. EDMTunes made its own list, with Eric Prydz finishing in first, followed by Above & Beyond and Claude VonStroke tied for second and Porter Robinson in third.
The newest DJ list comes from Reddit, which surveyed those in subreddits on EDM, trap and hardstyle. Just like EDMTunes, Reddit chose Eric Prydz as its number one DJ on the heels of his monstrous year. Porter Robinson came in second, representing an unbelievably refreshing variation from DJ Mag in the top two spots. The rest of the top 10 all placed high on DJ Mag’s list as well, with the notable exception of Madeon who was outrageously left off of DJ Mag’s list. This was a high point of Reddit’s list, as it featured many extremely talented producers DJ Mag shamefully neglected. This is a staggeringly impressive list featuring some of the best artists in the industry such as Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Flume, Odesza, Claude VonStroke, ZHU and Griz. Other DJ Mag rejects that Reddit thankfully acknowledged include Jamie xx, Mat Zo, Seven Lions, A-Trak, Aphex Twin, Maceo Plex, Mr. Carmack, Zeds Dead, Tipper, Gesaffelstein, Infected Mushroom, Lane 8, Lido, Cashmere Cat and Mura Masa. It’s also worth noting that Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike finished 47th.
